Case Study - Max
Apprentice
Engineering Fitter

Marden Edwards

What does an average day look like for you?

A typical day at my workplace can vary, however I have been put I charge of assembling the sized change parts for our machines and the products they package.  Some machines may be intended to overwrap more than one sized product, so there may be more than one set for each machine.

What personal qualities do you think are important to do your job?

The most important qualities that are needed to do my job as being able to use your initiative, paying close attention to detail, good communication skills and having a strong willingness to learn.  After all, every day is a school, day!

What has been your personal highlight so far?

My personal highlight so far would be becoming competent in what I do.  This has increased since starting with Marden Edwards.  My Manager now trusts me to be left alone to complete jobs knowing that the tasks will be carried out safely and correctly.  This gives me a great feeling of satisfaction.

How did you first become interested in Engineering?

I first became interested in engineering whilst I was at school.  I remember having to design and build an outdoor lamp for a project and using a lathe to produce a component for it.  My Dad encouraged me to pursue it at college and I loved it.  I even got a distinction out of it.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I was in a bit of a dilemma.  I wanted to further my engineering studies but another two years full time at college didn’t appeal to me.  I wanted to get out and see the real world of work, and begin my career.

With an apprenticeship I could do all of that whilst earning a wage and gaining valuable qualifications and experience.  It’s the best of both worlds for me, and I have not looked back!
