Case Study - Dylan
Apprentice Maintenance Engineer
Machinery Technician

ExxonMobil Fawley

What does an average day look like for you?

The average day on site starts with a job briefing which sets out the tasks for the day and helps to bring aspects like safety to the forefront of the task. We disperse and take on our jobs; working through technical packs to aid in fault diagnosis and ultimately the repair of the equipment.

What personal qualities do you think are important to do your job?

Resilience is key, the jobs rarely go as planned so to keep on pushing through is the only way things get done. This includes lots of improvisation which comes as a skill over time - to complete the job while on the clock without compromising safety.

How did you first become interested in engineering?

Mechanical engineering was a hobby before anything else; competing in hovercraft races across the country it was essential that I learned the skills necessary to stay in contention; this included developing my knowledge of components from the workings of the engine to the fabrication of structural elements. This hobby continued for years with the Exxon apprenticeship being the ideal way of building on my skills while working in an area I enjoy.

What has been your personal highlight so far?

One of many highlights for me has been being part of a large team of apprentices from all backgrounds where you're able to become an effective team as well as building personal relationships.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship for all the obvious reasons. I could work in the area I enjoy while gaining multiple qualifications which will set me up for the future along with a competitive salary which allowed me to carry on doing what I enjoy outside of work.
