Awards Evening 2024

Families, friends and employers of the first year apprentices came together to celebrate the success and achievements of the first year engineering apprentices at SETA's 54th Award Ceremony on the 25th July 2024.

They were joined by VIP guest The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor David Shields who was on hand to present certificates to the apprentices, along with members of SETA’s Board of Trustees. Julie Gough, Chief Executive Officer and Carlton Calver, Apprenticeship Services Manager led the proceedings for the evening.

During the first part of the evening Pete Hurlstone, Compliance Manager at SETA, proudly spoke on “Going Full Circle”, explaining how important time at SETA had been in starting his own engineering career path back in 1992 when he was an apprentice himself.  He explained where it took him in his journey, through to coming back to instructing at SETA to impart his knowledge to the next generation of engineers, culminating in the role he has today as part of the Management Team.

Following this, a “Day in the Life of an Apprentice” video starring many of this year’s first year apprentices gave an insight for the guests into the practical workshop training and classroom learning that the young people received during their time with SETA.

All apprentices were called to the stage individually to receive a certificate in recognition of completing their practical training at SETA. Guests were generous with their applause in celebrating this hard work and dedication as The Lord Mayor presented the certificates.

Michelle Rolfe, Engagement Services Coordinator, was invited to the stage to give a brief explanation on the purpose and importance of the Apprentice Council, before presenting certificates to those Apprentices who had volunteered their time to be Council Members during the year.

This year, for the first time in SETA’s history there was an additional award for the Skills Bootcamp.  Russ James, Commercial Manager at SETA, took to the stage to outline the scheme and to describe the dedication and commitment shown by the winner, Paul Alp, during the 16 week programme delivered by SETA.  The outcome of which was a full time role with Altrad.  The Award was sponsored and presented by the ECITB.

Without dedicated staff, none of the achievements would be possible.  So just ahead of the main awards Tim Millard, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, presented Steve Blake, Welding Instructor, with the “Employee of the Year” award as nominated by the first year apprentices.  With the many amazing comments sent in during the nomination, this award was well deserved by this popular, helpful member of the instructional team.

Prizes where then awarded for numerous category by the generous sponsors for particular categories acknowledging some incredible apprentice accomplishments made during the year.
