SETA Crest Award

Apprentices "Green Team" project accredited to a Silver CREST Award

SETA is proud to be able to say that one of the projects worked on by a team of first year apprentices during their 'off the job' training at SETA has been accredited to a Silver CREST Award.  The apprentices worked hard over several weeks pulling the information together, and their hard work and determination paid off with their project being submitted.

What is CREST?

The CREST Awards scheme is the British Science Association’s flagship programme for young people, providing science enrichment activities to inspire and engage 5-to-19-year olds. The CREST team accredits resources or activities that meet the guiding principles of CREST and that they feel could be used towards gaining a CREST Award.

The CREST scheme has been running since 1986 and inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers. It is the UK’s only nationally recognised scheme for student-led project work in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). It helps them to become independent and reflective learners through enquiry based project work.

It is a nationally recognised scheme for student-led project work in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). It gives young people aged 5–19 the chance to choose their own subject and methodology when completing their hands-on practical investigation and discussion.

A consistent and high standard of assessment and moderation is achieved for the scheme via a network of industry experts from the STEM and education sectors. It sees tens of thousands of young people taking part each year.

CREST provides activities and project ideas for a range of ages, group size and abilities. From off-the-shelf, one-hour long challenges through to large-scale, student-led projects of over 70 hours work or more, CREST can be done by anyone.

What levels are there?

There are six CREST Award levels. Depending on the age and ability of students and the time they have available to do the Award, would determine which level they would ideally work towards. All the Awards are open to all ages though.

The Green Team project was accredited a Silver Award.  This level is designed to stretch students and enrich their STEM studies. Students develop their own project idea and gain in-depth experience of the scientific method or engineering design process over 30 hours.
